The 73rd winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 13th September 1848 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Surplice, a bay colt by Touchstone out of Crucifix, owned by the 3rd Viscount Clifden. A field of 9 runners contested the race, although there were 132 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 6600 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £3,075 (Equivalent to £294,300 in 2017)
